Holly Near
In 1972, Holly Near founded the independent record label Redwood Records to produce and promote music of politically conscious artists. Her first album, Hang in There, was released in 1973. Imagine My Surprise, which was released in 1978, was her first album after she publicly came out as a lesbian.
Near wrote “Gentle Angry People,” later know as “Singing for Our Lives” in response to the assassination of of Harvey Milk 1978.
